Wessex Region Night League

The Wessex Region Night League is organised as an annual league over the winter months, with events contributed by clubs in the SWOA region. All of the events are open for entry by anyone, with the majority organised in a 60 minute score format – although there is always something unique.

Due to Covid-19 Guidelines, all events MUST be pre-entered using the method elected by the organising club.

    Welcome back!

We hope this email finds you all well and not too affected by the difficult times we have seen over the last few months. However after a busy summer of organising, rule changes, planning, more rule changes and risk assessments the arrival of the dark evenings brings with it the first race of the 2020/21 Wessex Region Night League.

We’d like to kick off by thanking everyone who has been preparing for the league and getting everything in place so that we can all take part in the sport that we love whilst also staying safe and following the guidelines. As a result, the league this year will look somewhat different to what we are used to. All races will we set up as contactless events, with the majority of them set up through the MapRun app. To keep you all up to date on how things have changed we have attached a copy of the rules and guidelines that were produced and agreed with the organisers and clubs. Please also note there is a NEW Novice League for those starting the sport within the last 2 years and to try and encourage new joiners to the sport. To be entered in this league, please email me at [email protected]

The start of the league saw us visit Upton Country Park with a fantastic long and fast course prepared by Alan Blachflower. 32 competitors turned up to race the first event of the season and it was good to see 3 were Night League Virgins. With plenty of potential route choices being decisive was key to maintaining a smooth flow.

Alan writes: In terms of the course only one competitor, Dan Cope managed to clear it in time, with just 18s tospare! My intention was for people to run clockwise, finishing up grabbing as many 10-pointers from the NE quadrant as they dared before their time ran out! Looks like most people did something like that and a lot of people had times between 59.00 and 61.00 so full use of their hour.

IMPORTANT: Going forward there are a few things that were noted during the first event that will need to be addressed going forward. We would ask organisers and participants to keep public car parks, footpaths and gate ways clear. We appreciate there is a level of enthusiasm to see each other or even start the event but we need to be considerate of each other as well as members of the public. Please remain social distanced within the start area, out of course and when you return and refrain from gathering to discuss your routes on your maps as it’s easy to forget that we need to remain a metre apart still! Map pickup will now be placed on the start control so that your planning time is included within your run – I noticed several of you studying the map and route choice before even starting your time so please be wary of this; we want to make it fair for all.  This format is obviously all very new and we appreciate it will be hard to get right straight away but if we can keep tweaking it we will have a great league with no problems going forward.

The next event is 30th October at Beggarwood, Basingstoke run by BADO. Make sure you sign up via their website.
